When comparing car rental prices remember to ensure that you
compare like for like. Companies may have variable insurance excess
and insurance may not cover all parts of the vehicle, especially
tyres and underside. Be sure to check that cover is adequate for
your needs. Many major companies operate desks at popular airports
and large hotels but you can book online in advance and pick up
your vehicle from the airport, local collection point or arrange
delivery to hotel. Most companies will require a deposit secured
against credit card and age restrictions apply to those wishing
to hire cars or included as named drivers.
Age Restrictions : Many car hire companies will not rent
a vehicle to anyone under the age of 25, although some may allow
the renter or named driver to be 23 or 21. There may be a surcharge
for young drivers and local country restrictions may affect the
ability of young drivers to find car hire in certain countries.
Insurance / Breakdown / Accident Cover and Procedure :
The vehicle that you rent for your holiday or business trip abroad
should be adequately insured. Check the cover that is included
in the event of damage or breakdown of the vehicle. Always bring
any prior existing damage to the attention of the company before
signing and driving the vehicle away. Notify the police immediately
of any accident and stay at the scene. Notify your car hire company
of any accident, breakdown or damage and follow the instructions
for assistance / recovery included in your vehicle rental agreement.
Size or Class of Car / Minivan / Van : Five large adults
plus holiday luggage into one Fiat Panda does not go, especially
in peak summer sun. Be sensible about the number of people the
vehicle is for, the distances you are going to be covering and
the type and size of car(s) you are going to need. A small minivan
may be preferable, or even two compact cars for more flexibility
if at least two of your party have a valid driving licence.
Getting used to the vehicle : Most companies will give
the renter a brief explanation or checklist of where simple things
like indicators and adjusters are in the vehicle. You should not
begin driving the car until you are sure where basic controls
are. If you have never driven a left hand drive car before then
a few trial gear changes whilst stationary will help you to avoid
reaching into the door well for the gear stick or handbrake at
a crucial moment. Avoid congested and city centre roads until
you feel confident with the vehicle.
Documents to carry : You should carry you driving licence,
passport and your copy of the rental agreement at all times when
you are using a hire vehicle. If you are stopped by the police
for any reason having these documents for identification and proof
of contract is essential and could save you a fine or visit to
the police station. Remember offences and accidents do not just
go away because you are in a foreign country and you should have
all relevant documents with you when you are driving.
Sensible Driving : Similar common sense driving laws apply
around Europe and worldwide. Do not drink and drive under any
circumstances. Do not drive when you are tired. Do not use your
mobile phone when driving. You and your passengers should all
wear seatbelts. Obey the speed limits and other rules of the road.
Driving in an unknown city or foreign country presents its own
problems and many car hire companies will provide you with a free
map of the area. If you intend to do any serious exploring, however,
then it is advisable to invest a small amount in some high quality
local driving maps or a road atlas. Whilst it is preferable to
have your passenger as navigator, if you do need to check the
map whilst driving you must pull over at the next safe opportunity.
For UK drivers, driving on the continent on the right hand side
of the road can add its own distractions and you should ensure
that your driving has your 100% attention at all times.
Enjoy : If you are on holiday, or even have some spare
time during a business trip, then get off the beaten track, seek
out those hidden treasures and enjoy your driving. Sweeping coastlines,
traditional villages, mountain passes and stunning panoramas are
a far cry from a London commute.
